Wow, awesome man.

I took the liberty of posting this on Fogbow in the Rest in Peace thread, OP.

Also, Darryl Dawkins died at the untimely age of only 58.

To do what Gen. Petersen did, at the time he did it, required enormous strain. He had to be perfect ALL THE TIME, or his career would have ended immediately.

I was glad to hear, watching the video at your link, that a few -- not many, not enough, but a few -- of his white fellow officers stood up for him at various times.

Once on NPR they were talking to one of the first black Army generals, and he had been stationed in Hawaii and met President Obama's father in the early '60s. I forget his name, but it was a good story.
