Is this a copperhead? Corn snake?

I thought he was a copperhead, but now I realize his head is the wrong shape entirely. A copperhead has a triangular shaped head.

Living up in ENC, you don't forget what a copperhead looks like:

The triangle head gives it away every time.

Your snake could be a water snake.

Yes, indeed. All venomous snakes in the US -- other than the coral snake -- all have triangular heads, since they keep their poison glands in their cheeks where it's handy. Easy to spot if you aren't too rattled by the initial meet-up with the snake in the first place.

I was tromping through a rough-cleared field one day with my scout troop and happened to look down just before I'da stomped on a coiled copperhead. I froze; processed the information; then yelled out to the others that I'd found a copperhead. They all came running over, and the senior scout caught him and put him in a jar, and turned him in to his biology teacher for extra credit.

I can't remember when exactly it was I finally lowered my leg and put my foot on the ground, but I do know it was a while after the snake was in the jar.

Concentrates the mind, it does, not unlike getting an angioplasty.

There's lots of snakes around. They've obviously had a good winter. If I recall correctly: the corn snake makes a good pet.

I like the snakes I see. Haven't found any venomous ones yet on the Greenway.

This one is (I think) a baby Rough Green Snake (Opheodrys aestivus). He's quite long for his girth. If you click to see it full size, you'll see his tail almost touches the bottom left of the photo.

I think this is a corn snake. The one posted by OP is a copperhead.

But I would have gladly killed both of them.
